The perfect balance of honey-sweet fragrance and malty-spicy cup - an excellent Assam tea from the south bank of the Brahmaputra River...

The Indian tea-growing region of Assam is the largest contiguous tea-growing region in the world. It produces strong, malty black teas that are appreciated all over the world. Like hardly any other tea garden in the region, Mokalbari stands for perfectly balanced malty and at the same time honey-sweet black teas.

The Mokalbari Tea Garden

The Mokalbari Tea Garden is located on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River in Upper Assam. The name MOKALBARI comes from the words "MOKAL" and "BARI". The word MO-KAL stands for a particular variety of tall bamboo plants with a diameter of 12" or more, while the word BARI refers to a particular place or garden. So the compound word MOKALBARI means a garden with a special variety of thick and tall bamboo trees. In the second half of the 19th century, a British planter was curious as to what natural factor contributed to this luxuriant growth of this species of bamboo in the area. He eventually discovered that the Brahmaputra, which rises from the glacier in the southeast of Lake Mansarowar in Tibet, carries abundant sandy loam soil from the hills of Tibet that regularly washes up on its southern bank. As an experienced planter, he realised that the continuous deposit of sandy loam in this area was the ideal topography for tea cultivation. In 1876, he uprooted the "MOKAL" bamboo trees and established a tea plantation, which he named Mokalbari Tea Estate. Today, Mokalbari stands for the perfect balance of honey-sweet fragrance and malty-spicy cup like hardly any other tea estate in the region.

Which tea cultivars were used for the tea?

Camellia sinensis var. Assamica (own clonals with an average age of 25 years).

What makes this tea so special?

The Assam Mokalbari Golden Malty consists of two single pluckings (Invoice No. 560 & 648), which are characterised by an extraordinarily high proportion of golden leaf buds. Both are characterised by the malty and honey-like aromas typical of Mokalbari. The cup is full-bodied, but can also be enjoyed wonderfully without the addition of milk and sugar. If you still like to enjoy the tea this way, you can slightly increase the amount of milk added to make the special flavour even stronger.
Alternative Tea Taster Preparation recommendation for this tea from our producer: 90° C hot water, 12-14 g per 1 litre of water, 4-5 minutes brewing time.
