Lemony, refreshing herbal tea from the sunny mountains of Greece

Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations. Olive oil and feta bring back memories of past summer holidays - but so does a very special herb, botanically known as Sideritis Scardica and known as "Greek mountain tea".

Siblings Eiridi and Nikos Malinis run a small family business that has set itself the task of bringing the wealth of aromatic plants from Greece to the world. In this interview, they reveal what makes their Greek mountain tea so special...

How did your joint family business come about?

Nikos: When my sister and I returned to our hometown of Kozani to be closer to our family and friends, the idea of growing and selling aromatic medicinal plants came naturally to us. Our parents are agronomists and very experienced in growing and caring for plants, while Eirini and I have a business background. This allowed us to combine our skills with the natural resources of our land. We now have 3 permanent employees and more than 15 seasonal employees during the harvest season from the beginning of June.

How did the cultivation of Greek mountain tea come about?

Sideritis was one of the first two crops we started working with. The plant is native to our mountains and the locals feel very connected to the herb as they have been growing it for centuries. The seeds originally came from this indigenous population and we decided to grow in the fields on the mountain slopes as Sideritis loves rocky and light soils.

What is important for cultivation?

The most important aspects are the climate, altitude and weather conditions, suitable seeds, cultivation methods and experience.

Where exactly does the herb grow?

We grow in Xirolimni, a small village near the town of Kozani in the north of mainland Greece. Our fields are located at an altitude of 700 metres on the mountain slopes where the sideritis grows naturally - this means that we grow it in its "natural" environment.

What is important for processing?

Harvesting and processing is carried out particularly carefully by hand. For TeeGschwendner, we cut the herb into small portions so that the gentle flavour can develop optimally during infusion.

What makes sideritis so popular in Greece?

Greek mountain tea has a long tradition here. It is particularly appreciated for its pleasant flavour with a light citrus note. It can be drunk hot or cold. As it contains no caffeine, it can be enjoyed at any time of day and is also suitable for children.
